In his 2019-11-24 sermon, Hong Kong Baptist Church (Caine Road) Pastor in-charge Kong Shan-wai stresses that just because most Hongkongers now share a common [political] stance like the Israelites who wanted Jesus crucified, doesn't mean it matches God's intention. Citing Deuteronomy 32: 35 KJV and Romans 12:19 KJV, "Avenge not yourselves... for... Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord", Kong warns Hong Kong activists against emulating the Endgame Avengers and physically chastising pro-CCP traitors. Kong asserts that Hongkongers must not usurp God's right to judge, that otherwise they will be judged and repaid by God. (By Chapman Chen, HKBNews)
Dr. Elmer Towns, Dean of the School of Religion, Liberty University, however, states that "Neither do these verses, nor do any other verses in the Bible, mean that a man should not defend his family or his country, but rather that he should not attempt personal vengeance, to compensate for personal injury" (BibleSprout .com). Hong Kong dissidents are not taking revenge on pro-CCP traitors for personal grievances, but for defending the Hong Kong nation against genocide by Nazi China. (So far, over 6000 dissidents have been arrested, incl. 1000 kids, 3000 people injured, and 16000 rounds of tear gas fired.)
The Bible at times encourages God's people to defend their family and nation, and avenge themselves on their enemies:-
"The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies" (Esther 8:13 KJV). "Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and avenge the Lord of Midian" (Numbers 31:3 KJV). "Fear not, nor be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you" (2 Chronicles 20:17 KJV). "If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him" (Exodus 22:2 KJV). Jesus even said, "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword" (Matthew 10:34KJV).
